Plant selection is very important when planning your Arizona landscape. There are several questions to ask before picking a plant. Six steps to picking the right plant in the right location.
1. Is this the right plant – in the right place?
2. Does the plant prefer full sun, afternoon shade or full shade and does the intended location fit the plants sun requirements?
3. How much space is needed (height and width) for this plant once it is full grown?
4. Is there underground utilities, a septic tank, power lines, roof overhangs or a pool that will be a potential problem in the future for this plant?
5. Does this plant have healthy roots and foliage? Look for a healthy root system by making sure the root ball is moist and holds firmly together. Foliage should look healthy with good color and have no evidence of insects or disease.
6. Was the plant grown in or at least well adapted to the local climate or was it grown in a greenhouse from a different climate. Plants that were grown from other areas may go into shock and die when planted in our soil and climate. Plants grown in or acclimated to local conditions will establish more readily and perform better.
